What is Commundo
Commundo is a, Dutch based, non profit organisation which organises holidays where the participants work as well as travel in developed countries.
We work together with local touroperators and NGO`s that are in need of workteams (volunteers).
Commundo inspires ordinary people from all backgrounds to participate in a challenging experience. Commundo runs 3 week programmes as part of a longer programme which includes a training prior to the expedition. A typical Commundo programme consists of 10 days volunteering work and 10 days travelling through the country in order to share cultures and assist in projects of NGO`s.
We offer people a unique opportunity to make a contribution to a worthwhile community project combined with adventurous travel and significant personal development.
We believe that we can help to make the world a better place with our programmes in which people get involved in other cultures and acquire a better (mutual) understanding of other worlds.
We started in Guatemala with our first trips in 2003. In 2004 we started in South Africa and in 2005 in Thailand and Sri Lanka. In 2006 we expanded with Surinam and this year, 2008, we visit projects in Romania. In the future, we would like to expand to other countries in other parts of the world.
Groups/workteams
Groups consist of 6-10 people depending on the capabilities of the cooperating NGO/local organization. The people that participate do in general not have much experience or special skills in the workingfield of the NGO. Projects we are looking for are projects concerning building/constructing, education, environment, (eco)-tourism, small business.
Groups are accompanied by a leader who is used to manage groups as a tour leader and is involved in the mission of Commundo. He/she speaks the local language fluently and has visited the country before. We work with local country-coordinators that coordinate the work with the local NGO`s. In this way we are sure that we understand each others expectations. Group members pay a total fee with of averagely 2.200 euro per person that includes the flight and most of the expenses. Groups are accommodated in local guesthouses and/or families/tents. Part of the fee is a donation to the project (NGO) for their cooperation, management, administration. Groupmembers try to collect some extra money/materials as well.
